f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS supports EUROCONTROL in the coordination of 8.33 kHz voice channel spacing (VCS) frequency deployment
Acknowledging the need for a coordinated deployment of Commission Regulation (EU) 1079/2012 requirements within the European airspace, the European Commission together with EUROCONTROL, the nominated Network Manager, identified a list of required tasks to be performed within the context of 8.33 kHz VCS deployment below FL195. Consequently the Network Manager is taking an active and central role in the coordination of the implementation of 8.33 kHz voice channel spacing capability below FL195 by monitoring and steering the implementation of 8.33 kHz VCS channels on both grounnd and air, providing a central coordination and information function on the granted exemptions and derogations and raising awareness and implementation support capabilities.
f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS has recently been contracted by EUROCONTROL in order to:
- provide EUROCONTROL with accurate information related to the characteristics of VHF radios currently in use in order to evaluate recent 8.33 equipment exemption strategies proposed by some states. This is particularly important for the VHF radios for General Aviation.
- provide EUROCONTROL with accurate information related to the characteristics of new 8.33 VHF radios available on the market in order to anticipate potential technical issues and problems during deployment.
- provide EUROCONTROL with a better understanding of a number of recent unsolved 8.33 radio interference cases and their potential impact.
- assist the European Network Manager in validating and potentially improving the frequency planning rules.
In this context f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS is currently testing several on-board radios for different aircraft classes and ground stations according to specific test criteria as defined by EUROCONTROL.

f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS celebrates its 25th anniversary! Founded in 1992 as Filser Electronic GmbH, our company was acquired by Funkwerk Dabendorf GmbH in 2007, and thus operated as Funkwerk Avionics GmbH from this date. With the takeover through f.u.n.k.e. MITTELSTANDS GmbH in 2012, the name finally changed to f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS GmbH.
Throughout all 25 years, our company developed and produced powerful and cost-effective products for general aviation. Just in time for our 25th anniversary, we have launched a completely new radio - the ATR833S. The radio is the successor of the well-known and highly appreciated ATR500 and further develops its straigthforward operation and display concept.
Inside the radio state-of-the-art electronics with digital signal and audio processing have been realised. In the development, a great emphasis was placed on a robust power supply, which makes the device insensitive to disturbances from the aircraft power system. The transmitter has an extremely high efficiency and thus requires little current during transmission. A large number of available adapters make the ATR833S a simple replacement solution for existing units.

In time for the legally required use of radios with 8,33 kHz channel spacing capability in Europe f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS now presents the actually most advanced and lowest priced fully certified radio with 8,33 kHz channel spacing capability in the world:
The ATR833S replaces the well-known ATR500 radio. It complies with the new channel separation of 8,33 kHz. The ATR833S is a completely new development with state-of-the-art digital signal processing resulting in a major improvement of voice quality. The extremely lightweight plastic housing, developed in co-operation with the related company f.u.n.k.e. PLASTICS GmbH, is a significant innovation that reduces the weight to below 400 grams and makes the ATR833S one of the lightest radios in its class.
Like the well-known ATR833 the ATR833S has a built-in voice controlled intercom. New is the automatic recognition of the microphone type. One main objective during the development of the ATR833S was to deliver a simple and intuitive operation. It will appeal to pilots, who appreciate the essence of easy operation. The bright two-line LCD display of the ATR500 was deliberately chosen, as it is easy to read with just a few additional icons providing all essential information. Of course, the radio has all functions that pilots can expect today. For the radio, a large number of cable adapters are available, so that in most cases an easy replacement of the device is possible.
With a list price of 1,007,56 Euros (net price without taxes) the ATR833S is the lowest priced fully certified radio with 8,33 kHz channel spacing capability on the world market and, therefore, the perfect choice in order to cope with the Implementing Regulation from the 1st of January 2018 in Europe.
